Thailand ranked first in the “World’s Best Tourist Country” category, making this the sixth consecutive year that Thailand has won the Swedish Grand Travel Award.
Mr. Thanavit Sinhaseni, Council Minister of the Royal Thai Embassy in Stockholm, and Mr Manit Boonchim, Director of TAT Stockholm, jointly accepted the award on behalf of the Kingdom of Thailand.
In the “World’s Best International Airlines” category, Thai Airways International the kingdom’s national carrier, ranked second, after Singapore Airlines.
Now into its sixteenth year, the annual Grand Travel Award — the equivalent of the travel and tourism industry’s ‘Oscars’ – is organized by Travel News, an independent Swedish travel trade magazine.
The 2008 award presentation ceremony, held at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden on March 5, was attended by over 500 distinguished representatives from the Swedish travel trade.
Winners in each of the 17 travel-related categories were selected by a travel trade jury and a random selection of more than 450 travel agents who ranked the nominees on a score of 1 to 6.

A total of ten countries were nominated in the ‘Best Tourist Destination’ category. Thailand won with an impressive score of 5.16.
The other top ten travel destinations deemed to be popular with Swedish travellers include Australia, the United States, South Africa, Italy, China, Spain, Dubai, the United Kingdom and Egypt. |

The Travel News Grand Travel Awards Committee comprises members of the publication’s editorial team and four representatives from the Swedish travel and tourism industry. The Award Committee submits its nominations for consideration by the 600 members of the Swedish travel and tourism industry; each allocates a score to the countries proposed by the Award Committee.
