In 2006, the Thai nation comes together to celebrate the auspicious occasion of the Sixtieth Anniversary Celebrations of His Majesty the King’s Accession to the Throne in 2006 and His Majesty's Eightieth Birthday in 2007. To mark this momentous occasion, “Royal Flora Ratchaphruek” is one of the grand celebrations being hosted by the Royal Thai Government in honor of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), the ninth ruler of the illustrious Chakri Dynasty and the world’s longest reigning monarch.

Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006, one of the world’s finest tropical flower, fruit and plant expositions befitting the name, Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 – International Horticultural Exposition for His Majesty the King, will be hosted in the city of Chiang Mai from November 1, 2006 to January 31, 2007.

Through Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 — International Horticultural Exposition for His Majesty the King, the Thai people come together to express their utmost gratitude for His Majesty’s benevolence, care and concern. Time-honored traditions will be observed; only the very finest available will be presented to the ‘Devaraja’ or ‘Divine King’. Celebrations of this magnitude happen only once in decades.

Thailand will be joined by her international friends – nations with whom Thailand has shared historical, cultural, diplomatic and trade ties, many spanning centuries. Over 30 countries are expected to participate in ‘Gardens for the King’. The International Gardens will feature unique or innovative landscaping and horticultural highlights from the participant’s homeland.

Participating Countries
To date, 32 nations have confirmed participation in the International Garden section of Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006. They are Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, China, Brunei, Turkey, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Mauritania, Kenya, Nigeria, Gabon, Sudan, Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa, Burundi, Qatar, Iran, Yemen, Trinidad & Tobago, Canada.

Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 is the first ever international horticultural exposition with A1 status recognized by The Association of International Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and the International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE) to be held in Thailand.

To be awarded A1 status, host countries must meet the stringent standards and guidelines established by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and must be sanctioned by the BIE. Endorsement of Thailand’s bid is based on an assessment of capabilities and readiness to host a BIE-recognized international horticultural exposition.

Competitions
With the orchid exhibition lasting a full 92 days, the organizers have planned weekly orchid competitions. These include natural orchid gardens; landscaped orchid gardens featuring the innovative or imaginative use of orchids; potted orchids; and cut flowers. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, entries will be judged in accordance with internationally-recognized standards. This is the first time that international standards will be applied to judging orchids in Thailand.

One of the competitions will be live orchid arrangement in which entrants must use their creativity to design an arrangement of living orchid plants, either incorporated into a small natural garden setting or combined with other decorative objects in a free style arrangement.
