THAILAND
LADIES’ PARADISE
Last year, Thailand saw a massive increase of women entering the Kingdom -- up almost 30 per cent from the previous year. Is this an accident or are these ladies catching on to the fact that the ‘Land of Smiles’ has much to offer them? It is truly no accident. Where else in the world can you enjoy a round of golf, tour some choice markets, get pampered from head to toe and then indulge in a scrumptious five-course meal -- all in one day? Well, of course that depends on how ambitious you are, but in terms of the variety of sightseeing, dining, health and wellness, nightlife and social networking options, Thailand is a prime destination for women from all walks of life and backgrounds. If you have just arrived in Thailand, learn more about the culture by taking a cooking course. Even if you don’t know your way around a wok, by the end of the day you’ll be turning out a mean dish of Tom Yam Goong (spicy shrimp soup).
Thai cooking classes are available in most hotels in Bangkok, but one of the best and most relaxing places to try out your culinary skills is in the northern city of Chiang Mai. Almost every guesthouse offers cooking classes that cost between $20 and $70 depending on the length of the course, which can range from one to five days. And the best part is you get to eat everything you make! |

Whether you enjoy bargain basement discounts or need the latest labels lining your closet, shopping in Bangkok is truly ‘a ladies’ playground’. Stroll around any number of outdoor markets that offer everything from cosmetics, funky clothing, house-ware, handicrafts and food -- not to mention jewellery, art work, paper lamps and so many souvenir-worthy items -- and you'll be adding another suitcase to your shopping list! After all that shopping, treat yourself to a foot or full-body massage, or get primped and pampered from head to toe. There are a number of high-end and budget beauty salons that offer haircuts, treatments, highlighting and hair colouring. (A little hint: Most street-side salons offer manicures and pedicures for as little as $2.)
For more regal indulgences, many fine hotels house spas that offer treatments such as aromatherapy massage to being ensconced in a full-bodied orange-chocolate wrap and soothing papaya scrub facials. Be careful not to go on an empty stomach, or you might be tempted to sample the products!
NIGHTLIFE Now that you have been reborn, get out there and experience Bangkok after dark. Today, many local bars and pubs host 'ladies nights’ during the week with drink specials and other discounts. If you are in the mood for dancing, downtown hotels house discos or live bands that play popular English songs guaranteed to get you grooving!

Yoga and Pilates centres are growing in popularity with some convenient and affordable places for the beginner, novice or expert yoga master. Golf courses are also very lady-friendly and are equipped with locker rooms and facilities just for women. Not only are these options great for your health and spiritual well-being, but you are bound to meet other women who share your passions and interests!
Need to escape the city and recharge your batteries? Check out some of the choice spas located on the islands. Or get in touch with your inner self by undertaking a meditation course.
If you are looking for something more active to get the blood pumping, there are a host of fitness centres in Bangkok that offer state-of-the art equipment and provide classes in everything from body combat to hip-hop dance classes.
Other ways to stay in shape include jogging in Bangkok's 'lung', Lumphini Park, or taking a mountain-biking trip outside the city. Thai kick-boxing (known as muay Thai) gyms in and around Bangkok are very receptive to women, no matter your level or experience with the sport!

Afternoon high teas found at fine hotels are perfect ways to spend lazy afternoon gossip sessions with friends -- or pour over the weekend paper on your own at one of a number of coffee shops in Chiang Mai or Bangkok. Sample some of the locally grown beans and unwind after a hectic week!
GET CONNECTED:
If you have just moved to Bangkok and are interested in connecting with other like-minded ladies, there are a number of social groups that hold events or more casual get-togethers for women only. A recent addition to the social networking scene is BNOW, a weekly e-mail group that answers questions about living in Bangkok. The group also hosts speed dating events -- a definite must for all the single ladies out there. You can find them at www.geocities.com/bnow_th/BNOW.html or e-mail the group at BNOW@inet.co.th.
Another social group that holds informal get-togethers at bars or pubs in the city is SWIB (Social Women In Bangkok). Contact them at swib@pacific.net.th
For the literary-minded lady, check out the Bangkok Women's Writers Group. It’s a social writing group for women interested in poetry, fiction, non-fiction, essays etc. The group holds weekly writing sessions and occasional afternoon teas at the Oriental Hotel. Contact Lois Ann Haley-Dort at bkk_writers@yahoo.com (02-653-8753) or visit www.bwwg.net.
With so many great activities, and attractions to explore, the only problem any savvy lady would have is finding the time to do it all! So what are you waiting for? Take the plunge and dive in to all that Thailand has to offer. The only thing you will regret is that you didn't visit sooner.
