NAKHON RATCHASIMA CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVAL 2007
February 16 – 18, 2007

At Muang Thong Park, near the statue of Khunying Mo

Pay homage to Khunying Mo, the courageous heroine of Nakhon Ratchasima province. Festival highlights range from traditional Chinese performances associated with Chinese New Year celebrations such as lively street processions*, the ever-popular Lion Dance, performances of traditional Chinese opera, fashion shows, a Chinese food festival, contests such as the Noodle Contest and Fried Noodle Contest, performances of Chinese folk songs by various associations, societies and clubs as well as contemporary musical concerts by popular Thai artists. Festive decorations such as the traditional Chinese lanterns featuring an impressive 40-metre long ‘Dragon and Hongse’ lantern and ‘lanterns of the eight Chinese dieties’ set the scene for the celebrations.

On a more formal note, the province will also be staging educational exhibitions and displays honouring His Majesty the King’s on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty’s 80th birthday anniversary in 2007, the ‘Year of the Pig’.

*The first procession sets out from Wat Burapha temple and ends at the Thao Suranaree Memorial, while the second sets off from the Nakhon Sawan municipal office and converges at the memorial.

NAKHON SAWAN CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVAL 2007
February 11 – 22, 2007

At Sawan Park (formally referred to as Uttayan Sawan Nong Somboon Park) on Khosee Road, Nakhon Sawan provincial centre

The visiting cultural troupes from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) will be travelling north to delight audiences with traditional Chinese performances associated with Chinese New Year celebrations and other cultural presentations such as the traditional Beijing Chinese opera and the Hangzhou Dance.

Festival highlights will include a night-time Chao Phor Chao Mae Pak Nam Po Procession on 20 February, followed by a day-time procession on 21 February, a food fair and a series of other concerts. A concert performance by Todd Thongdee, one of Thailand’s favourite cross-cultural folk song artists is expected to be a major draw. Born and bred in the US, Todd Thongdee made Thailand his home and his noted for his ‘East meets West’ fusion-style of ‘world music’.

Sawan Park on Khosee Road is also known by its formal name – Uttayan Sawan Nong Somboon Park.

The Chinese New Year is also a time to engage in spiritual worship to start off the new year on an auspicious note. Make a trip to Chinese shrines to pay homage to holy spirits and pray for the happiness, good health and prosperity throughout the coming year. Witness a traditional procession staged as a ritual offering to appease guardian spirits on this auspicious occasion as it meanders through the streets of Ang Sila.
