Prior to the commencement of the races, a water-borne merit-making ceremony
will be performed in the foreground of the Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat Maha Worawihan temple.
The ceremony known as Tawt Pha Pa Ruea Yao, (which means the presentation of sacred saffron-coloured monk robes and other Buddhist merit-making offerings in a procession of long-boats), highlights the ancient origins of the traditional long-boat races in traditional Thai river-side communities.
A highly-informative and educational exhibition at the temple traces the history and evolution of long-boat and offers insight into and the significance of the long-boat races in traditional Thai riparian communities in which the rivers, canals and waterways were once the principle means of travel and transportation. This still remains true for many of Thailand’s river-side communities.
A traditional long-boat race with 7 paddlers between the reigning champions representing the districts of Wat Bot and Tha Thong kicks-off the official races.
For those of you who are unable to travel to Phitsanulok to witness the races first-hand, the races will be broadcasted live on Thai TV Channel 11 from 16.00 to 17.00 hours.

Event dates and programme details may be subject to change.
Many of the festivals and events listed on Thailand's official calendar of annual events are traditional Buddhist or folk festivals, the date of which is either determined by the Buddhist lunar calendar and waxing and waning moon. These are not staged events. The festivals reflect the rhythm of life in rural Thai villages and local traditions as observed in times past.
