SI SATCHANALAI SONGKRAN FESTIVAL
APRIL 8-12, 2008

Si Satchanalai Historical Park

Gain insights into traditional Thai ways during these Songkran Thai New Year celebrations held at Si Satchanalai Historical Park, one of Thailand’s UNESCO-designated Cultural World Heritage Site.

Highlights
7 April
  A Buddhist ordination ceremony is performed at Wat Hat Seow temple in Si Satchanalai district. This is followed by a procession of young novices on elephant back, a practice that is unique to the residents of Hat Seow.
12 April
15.00 Phor Muang (village chief) Elephant Procession
Witness a procession of a herd of 30 majestic elephants cross the Kaeng Luang rapids in the Mae Yom River River as they head towards Si Satchanalai Historical Park

  • Rot nam dam hua ceremony
    Scented lustral water is poured over the hands of elders and individuals held in high esteem in a gesture of respect
  • Folk performances and folk games
  • Tour of the historical park on elephant back
  • Sales of local products and fruits freshly-picked from the plantations

Sukhothai Historical Park, Sukhothai

Journey back in time as local residents, many of whom will be dressed in traditional Thai costumes, celebrate the Songkran Thai New Year, the traditional Thai way. Popular Songkran highlights include a procession of floral carts, Miss Songkran beauty contest, the building of sand stupas at Wat Tapang Thong temple and lots of water-splashing to 'beat the heat' during the kingdom’s hottest season in the year.
