8th BANGKOK CHESS CLUB OPEN
April 1 – 6, 2008
At the Century Park Hotel near Victory Monument

The 8th Bangkok Chess Club Open is being held from April 1 – 6, 2008 at the Century Park Hotel near the Victory Monument.

The tournament is co-organized by the Bangkok Chess Club and Thailand Chess Association. This year the Open will be the strongest ever in Thailand, including 7 international grandmasters and a top-10 player from the United States, Varuzhan Akobian.

Overall 32 countries are represented with national team level players participating from more than 10 countries. Thailand’s top players and promising juniors will be competing as well in this international chess event.

Chess has been gaining popularity in Thailand in recent years. Last year, a large tournament was held in Phuket, amongst other smaller events, and the Bangkok Chess Club regularly meets in Bangkok. Corporate sponsorships have also helped — Yachiyoda Alloy Wheel, Siam Commercial Bank, and Agora Business Consulting are kindly supporting the tournament this year.

Although some rather fierce and interesting chess is sure to be seen at the Open this year, spectators and players of all levels are welcome. There are no age or skill restrictions and older players are regularly seen playing rated chess with teenage juniors, or younger.

  IMPORTANT
Event dates and programme details may be subject to change.
Many of the festivals and events listed on Thailand's official calendar of annual events are traditional Buddhist or folk festivals, the date of which is either determined by the Buddhist lunar calendar and waxing and waning moon. These are not staged events. The festivals reflect the rhythm of life in rural Thai villages and local traditions as observed in times past.
