The Asian Martial Art Games is the latest games set up by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). Thailand — the ‘Land of Smiles’, will be hosting the 1st Asian Martial Art Games 2009 during August 1-9, 2009 .
Nine types of sports will be featured over the nine-day period — Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, Kickboxing, Kurash, Muay Thai, Pencak silat, Taekwondo and Wushu — will be featured during the event.
The opening and closing ceremony will be held at the Hua Mark Indoor Stadium on 1 August and 9 August, respectively. HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will graciously preside at both ceremonies.

A total of 986 athletes from 40 participating countries, including 68 from Thailand, will be competing in the events. The event is expected to attract some 2,500 visitors from 40 participating countries. These are: Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, People's Republic of China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lao PDR, Lebanon, Macau, Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, Syria Arab Republic, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, The Republic of Yemen
Competitions will be held in six venues:
At the Main Stadium of the Hua Mark Indoor Stadium Sport Complex, the Bangkok Youth Centre (Thai-Japanese) Stadium in Din Daeng, Nimibutr Gymnasium at the National Stadium, Supachalasai National Stadium, the Chantana YingYong Building at the National Stadium, and the Chaofah Mahachakree Sirinthorn Building at the Sports School in Suphan Buri Province and the Silpa-Archa Building at the Suphan Buri Sports Center in Suphan Buri province.
The top five countries in the Asian Games — China, South Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan and Thailand and other countries such as Uzbekistan and Indonesia from where kickboxing and pencak silat originates — are the expected contenders for the top three spots in this international competition.
Being the first country to host the Asian Martial Art Games will also help promote Thailand’s image as a sports tourism destination to the world.
