THE RITUAL BATHING OF PHRA BUDDHA MAHADHAMARACHA
UM PHRA DAM NAM CEREMONY
September 17-21, 2009

Phra Buddhamahadammaraja, the principle Buddha image at Wat Traiphum temple, is the spiritual guardian of Petchabun province.

The Phra Buddhamahadammaraja Buddha image is invocated in the Um Phra Dam Nam ritual bathing ceremony performed by the provincial governor to ensure an abundance of crops, plentiful harvests and the prosperity of Petchabun, the ‘city of plants and crops’.

Phra Buddhamahadammaraja Buddha image is associated with the powers to heal illness and agricultural abundance.

An invocation ritual inviting celestial spirits is performed at Wat Traiphum.

Buddhist monks chant incantations.

17.00

A land-borne procession of the Phra Buddhamahadammaraja Buddha image from Wat Traiphum to Petchbura Park is held. This is accompanied by cultural performances as the procession makes its way along the route.

A water-borne procession transports the Phra Buddhamahadammaraja Buddha image from Wat Traiphum pier to Wat Bot Channamarn pier.

The ritual bathing of the sacred Buddha image is performed by the provincial governor.

The first round of the traditional boat races is held near the Wat Traiphum pier. During the competition, oarsmen demonstrate their strength, stamina and skill by rowing against the current.
