14th ELEPHANT SATOKE (KHANTOKE) FAIR
January 29 – 31, 2010 (from 13.00 to approximately 15.00 hrs)
At the Thai Elephant Conservation Center, Hang Chat district, Lampang province

"Satoke” is a variation of the Northern Thai or Lanna-style set dinner called “Khantoke” in which a variety of dishes are served on a circular tray or table.

Known to the locals as Satoke Chang, the highlights of the annual Elephant Satoke Fair at the Thai Elephant Conservation Center in the Hang Chat district of Lampang province features grand processions consisting of the procession of huge trays of food for the elephants — satoke chang, and magnificent cultural processions. Adult elephants need up to 200 kilograms of food a day. Lampang’s satoke chang provides a sumptuous feast of fruits and vegetables for the elephants, including their favourites such as bananas, sugar cane, water melon, and apple.

Other highlights of the fair include a live demonstration of elephants at work, an exhibition on elephants, a contest in which participants construct decorative arches with fruits and vegetables, stage performances presented by students from the local schools, exhibitions of local culture and tradition, a traditional Northern-style open-air market, or kaad mua, with food stalls and sales of OTOP village products from each of the local sub-districts (tambon) promoted under the One Tambon One Product (OTOP) banner.

The fair is being organized by The Thai Elephant Conservation Centre to raise funds for the purchase of food for the elephants.
