The Fluorescent People
(based on an idea by Gilles Crampes and Marc Lathuillière)

The inhabitants of a Lissou village (Ban Sam Kula), a minority in the mountains in Northern Thailand are invaded by strange installations. Dressed in their own flashy attire, they pose, caught between fear and surprise. The exhibition showcases the mise en scene photography and the photographer’s creative touches on the Lissou New Year day — performance, installation of neon lights, changing headgear and dresses that have been transformed by the artist. The exhibition questions the way we look at people who, more often than not, are the prisoners of tradition in our photos.

Marc Lathuilliere was a freelance reporter before taking up photography. His true/false documentaries Transkoreana (2003-2004) and France Face Perdue (2004-2010), highlight our ethnocentric vision and the way we view the  exotic others. A deconstruction of photography, which through two Thai projects Toyland (2005-2007) and now The Fluorescent people, show himself questioning his own pictures through performances and installations. Represented in Paris by the Eric Mircher gallery, Marc Lathuillière’s work has been exhibited in Asia (Hong Kong, Bangkok, Séoul, Manila etc) in France and in the US.

  IMPORTANT
Event dates and programme details may be subject to change.
Many of the festivals and events listed on Thailand's official calendar of annual events are traditional Buddhist or folk festivals, the date of which is either determined by the Buddhist lunar calendar and waxing and waning moon. These are not staged events. The festivals reflect the rhythm of life in rural Thai villages and local traditions as observed in times past.
