“Bach to the Future” concert to launch Siam Sinfonietta youth orchestra
A great introduction to classical music for the whole family
The Siam Sinfonietta was created by Maestro Somtow Sucharitkul to bring the cream of Thailand's youthful instrumentalists (ages 14-21) together with the ambition of developing a different kind of youth orchestra: one that really tries to come to terms with the serious, standard orchestral repertoire.
After several months of auditions, the orchestra met for the first time at the "Bach to the Future" science through music camp organized by the Thailand Science Park. The mission at the camp was to forge a viable symphony orchestra in three days.
Now, six weeks later, they are getting ready for their first public airing. They will have a special concert in Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat) on May 2, followed by a Bangkok "launch concert" on May 4, 2010 at SCB Park Plaza, Mahisorn Hall, which has generously been provided by Siam Commercial Bank Plc.
The launch concert of the new youth orchestra commemorates the royal birthday of HRH Princess Galyani, who was an avid supporter of classical music and arts and the former patron of the Bangkok Opera Foundation.
With the "Bach to the Future" theme, the concert will begin with Bach and progress through performances of Haydn's Symphony No. 83, Mozart's Symphony No. 40, Charles Ives' "The Unanswered Question" and the premiere of a new composition by 18-year-old Natthapong Yutthanasirikul (Jay) called "Aldebaran", to conclude with a truly "cosmic" piece which the orchestra will improvise on the spot.
Geared for families and people new to classical music, and, who would like to learn more about it, Maestro Somtow will give a brief explanation of the music being performed in Thai.
The concert will start at 7:00 p.m., and admission is free. However, donations would be appreciated to further support the Siam Sinfonietta Youth project. Reservations can be made through Khun Ratana at the Bangkok Opera office
