NEW YEAR COUNTDOWN
December 31, 2005– January 1, 2006
Diversity is the common theme for New Year Countdown celebrations throughout the Kingdom. Each sends off the past year and greets the New Year in own unique way, reflecting local cultural flavour.
Wherever you might be around Thailand this festive season, each of the regions promise exciting or enthralling sights and sounds and colourful experiences. As the New Year party ends, many head for the temples for merit-making to ensure that a bright and happy New Year follows.
BANGKOK
- COUNTDOWN 2006 @ RATCHAPRASONG
- THE NATIONAL STADIUM
- SANAM LUANG
- RAMA VIII BRIDGE
|
There is undoubtedly a different beat and rhythm to each of the New Year Countdown celebrations in various corners of the ‘City of Angels’, but all equally uptempo. Traditional, folk, contemporary, nouveau, fusion ‘East Meets West’, world music and a variety of stage performances provide all night entertainment right through to the countdown when dazzling traditional fireworks displays momentarily light up the night sky. Partying continues into the early hours of the morning.
Festive celebrations at the Ratchaprasong Countdown and the National Stadium take on a contemporary note, while at the timeless historical site of Sanam Luang and the majestic Rama VIII bridge, Thai touch prevails.

COUNTDOWN TO THAILAND’S FIRST SUNRISE 2006
December 31, 2005– January 1, 2006
At Pha Taem National Park, Khong Chiam district,
Ubon Ratchathani province
Ubon Ratchathani, furthest east of the country, is the first province in the kingdom to greet the sunrise. Its rugged but extraordinary landscape is punctuated by craggy cliff-faces, rocky terrain dotted with towering columns, odd-shaped rock formations, and torrential cataracts along the stretch of the Mekong River. It is home to two national parks - The Pha Taem National Park and Kaeng Tana National Park. Both offer excellent vantage points for viewing a spectacular sunrise or sunset against a magnificent backdrop that extends for miles.
The New Year Countdown at Pha Taem National Park in Ubon Ratchathani offers a truly unique cultural experience. Watch the last sunset of 2005 as you cruise along the Mekong River as it flows through the city of Ubon Ratchathani in Northeastern Thailand. As the golden rays retreat behind the curtain of night, a warm orange glow lingers in the sky. The silvery moon rises. As night begins to fall, drive to the top of Pha Taem cliff where the evening’s feast features the traditional I-san style set dinner known as palaeng. Folk music, cultural performances and folk entertainment maintain a lively scene as guests are entertained as they await the Countdown and hold their all night vigil to greet Thailand’s first sunrise. The vigil ends with merit-making.

Along the Mekong River and at the Indochina Market in Mukdahan
December 30
Celebrate a ‘Second Honeymoon’; camp out under the stars at Phu Pha Thoep
Rock Art of Phu Pha Thoep
Impressive natural sandstone sculptures are chiselled and shaped by the erosive forces of sun, wind and water over the millennia. Massive rocky escarpments are sculpted into bizarre amorphous shapes forming dramatic cliffs with giant slabs of rock stacked up on top of each other in random, haphazard fashion scattered throughout the highland plateau. This spectacular ‘rock art’ rivals the finest works of art by the great masters.
The rocky cliffs of Phu Pha Thoep can be visited throughout the year, but the best time to visit is from October through to December when the weather is cool and comfortable, and flowering plants spring forth from rocky crevices.
