Phuket International Marine Expo (PIMEX) – The Phuket Boat Show, a waterfront boating, leisure and island lifestyle show, will be held once again at the Phuket Boat Lagoon marina from 8th - 11th December 2005.

The emphasis in 2005 will once again be on creating a lifestyle exhibition centred around the marine leisure industry with a carefully chosen selection of properties and residences in and around Phuket. If you have an interest in buying marine or leisure products or services, including boat ownership and all that it offers, or are looking for a tropical home or a yatch for charter, visit PIMEX 2005.

The opening day of the show will coincide with the rest day of the annual Phuket Kings Cup Regatta which will ensure a bumper attendance for the third year running.

By the time of the show, Phuket's third marina will be open for business and two others will be breaking ground – presenting opportunities for boat sales, marina hardware, and marine services to join in the boom that has continued unabated in spite the Tsunami at the end of last year. The damage to marine infrastructure in Phuket was thankfully very slight and all operations were up and running again within days.

The island's tourist industry is very focused in offering good value and service to bring the number of visitors quickly back up to pre-Tsunami figures.

With a total of 4,000 quality visitors attending the 2004 show, exhibitors reported record sales and orders after the show.

In addition to trade visitors including boat builders and charterers and the regional marine trade; Thailand’s industrial marine market; potential buyers from countries around the region such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Jakarta and Hong Kong; hotel and resort management and buyers; boat charter operators, agents and clients, other visitors who attended the boating and lifestyle show consisted of international visitors in Phuket (approximately 30,000 hotel rooms), Bangkok’s untapped leisure boating market, King’s Cup Regatta participants comprising boat owners, skippers and VIPs.

Following the great success of Pimex 2004, the layout will be similar with space for 85 booths in the air-conditioned main hall, 3,000 sq metres of outside display area and 30 in water berths. As an addition to display options a limited number of private VIP pavilions will be made available.

Phuket's second boat show in December 2004 achieves record sales
120 exhibitors, representing 150 companies from 18 countries participated in PIMEX 2004, while visitor numbers increased from 3,000 to 4,000 in 2004. Orders transacted and finalised during the four days of Phuket International Marine Expo (PIMEX) 2004, held from 9 to 12 December, totalled more than US$2.0 million with a further US$7.0 million of enquiries. Many more exhibitors reported strong leads, while the surge in upcoming marina construction accounted for a further US$12.0 million written quotations in that sector alone.

Thailand’s Zero Boat Tax
From 18 February 2004, boats in the following categories imported into Thailand do not have to pay import or excise taxes:
1. inflatables
2. sailboats (with or without auxiliary motor)
3. motorboats (other than outboard motorboats)
4. other

VAT, currently at 7%, will still apply. This move on the part of the Thai government is a first major step in the encouragement of marine leisure industry growth. It is expected to result in an exponential increase in the size of Thailand's leisure craft fleet, with a resultant surge in demand for all marine products.

Thailand & The Marine Leisure Industry
Following the reduction of tax to zero, revisions to other legislation and regulations affecting marine tourism are imminent. The Thai government under Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has recognised the potential of the marine leisure industry to promote high value tourism and to boost local economies. Having achieved the first milestone, the Marine Alliance of Thailand (MAT) is continuing to work with government and officials in pursuit of the right conditions for an industry boom.

For its part, the government is eager to encourage new marina development and more top-drawer charter operators, and is working on strategic development plans that include the Eastern Gulf, Koh Samui, Phuket, Phang-nga and Krabi.
