The sea-side resort of Cha-am will be hosting its annual ‘Fish – Flock – Shellfish Festival’ from September 24 to October 2, 2005.
The festival promises to be a seafood lover’s delight with 50 beachfront food stalls serving an assortment of delicious dishes featuring a variety of fresh shellfish, fish and seafood, prepared by chefs from leading hotels and restaurants in Cha-am and offered at very attractive prices.
Freshly caught shellfish and seafood will be first inspected by the local public health officials to ensure that the ingredients are of the highest quality, fresh and clean.
You might also contemplate catching your own fresh squid. For the adventure seeker, a squid-fishing trip is one of the festival highlights. No prior experience is needed; just learn by example. The local fishermen will show you the ropes.
The best time for finding an abundance of squid is after dark, when they venture close to the surface of the water in search of food. Squid are attracted by light so to lure the squid to the fishing vessel, the craft is decorated with bright green lights.
Meet up at the pier by the Viewing Terrace (joot chom view in Thai ) overlooking Cha-am Beach. The trip departs at 19.00. Participants set out from the shore in small fishing boats, in parties of 7-10 persons per boat, to board a larger squid-fishing vessel anchored out at sea. Squid-fishing equipment and bait will be provided.
Try your hand at this new venture. For newcomers, it promises to be a fascinating and exhilarating experience. To join the trip, proceed to the Information Tent in the festival area by the Viewing Terrace on Cha-am Beach. The trip cost per person is 100 Baht per hour.
Nature lovers will be able to join morning or evening excursions along bird-watching trails at various sites within 10 to 15 km of Cha-am Beach such as Thung Takaht Phlee moor, Klong Tian canal, Koh Tha Sai island and Khao Nang Panturat National Park.
Other attractions include stage performances, entertainment, squid-fishing and squid-eating contests, shell-fish, crab-catching and birdwatching contests and opportunities to shop for local products.
Note: Trips are subject to weather, wind and wave conditions. Please check. Programme details may be subject to change without advance notification. Please reconfirm prior to travel.
