Mission

The TAT's mission is to promote Thailand as a tourist destination to potential visitors worldwide, while also supporting the development of the Kingdom's tourism industry.  It also encourages domestic travel for Thai people to better understand and appreciate the wide and varied natural features, cultures and attractions that the Kingdom offers.  Tourism is important for generating sustainable economic growth and providing jobs and income for millions of Thais, ensuring a higher quality of life.

To achieve its mission, the TAT develops and implements proactive marketing and communications strategies based on exhaustive research.  The aim is to increase share of large, mature markets as well as develop new niche and growth markets to attract more high-quality tourists to Thailand.

The TAT connects with potential visitors through several channels.  There are 26 international TAT offices that do activations and promotions in the markets for which they are responsible.  This includes participation in key travel trade shows, as well as joint activities with tour operators.  The TAT also conducts comprehensive advertising campaigns in print and broadcast media.

Online marketing is playing an increasingly important role in the tourism sector, and the TAT is recognised as a leader in this area.  This includes the use of social media channels as well as Web sites.

On a broader scale, the TAT supports co-operation in terms of tourism promotion among the public and private sectors, both at domestic and international levels.  This will help to ensure a unified strategy and reinforce Thailand's position as the tourism hub of Southeast Asia.

Internally, the TAT strives to initiate advanced employee development programs to ensure that its people become driving forces in leading the organization under good governance in today’s more competitive global tourism markets.

History

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) traces its roots back to 1960.  In March of that year, the Thai government established the Tourist Organization, the Kingdom's first independent body to be specifically responsible for promoting tourism.  It was renamed as the Tourist Organization of Thailand (TOT) in 1963.

The TOT's first international office opened in New York in 1965, while the first regional office opened in Chiang Mai in 1968.  As Thai tourism increased and became an increasingly important part of the Kingdom's economy, the Thai government saw the need to place a greater emphasis on marketing the Kingdom as a destination for global travellers.  In 1979, the government passed a bill that brought the Tourism Authority of Thailand into existence.

Since then, the TAT has grown into a sophisticated marketing organization with 26 international offices and 35 regional offices throughout Thailand.  The TAT has helped to make Thailand one of the world's favourite destinations for travellers, with over 19.1 million international visitor arrivals in 2011.

About the Governor

Mr Suraphon Svetasreni is the eighth governor of the TAT since the national tourism organization was founded in 1960.  He officially assumed his duties for a four-year term on 1 January, 2009.

Governor Suraphon joined the TAT in September 1977.  His broad experience at the TAT includes working in areas such as market development, research, marketing communications, and policy & planning.  Governor Suraphon also gained valuable insights into overseas marketing during his four years as Director of the TAT New York office.

During his 32 years with the TAT, Governor Suraphon has contributed to the success of Thailand's many global destination marketing campaigns, developed strategic and tactical marketing and public relations campaigns, and was involved in tourism product development.  He also personally championed crisis management and communications efforts for the Thai tourism industry.

His expertise proved a tremendous asset in Governor Suraphon’s role of leading the TAT's crisis communications and tourism recovery efforts.  This resulted in the rapid recovery of Thailand's vital tourism sector following the many crises that the country has faced over the last several years.

Governor Suraphon also increased the use of information technology to achieve marketing objectives and goals, as well as broadening the TAT's social media and digital marketing efforts.
