FLOODING ON SAMUI ISLAND (KOH SAMUI)

The island of Koh Samui has been hit by torrential rain that has continued unabated since 6 November 2007. Many roads on the island are flooded.

MAIN ROADS
The section of the coastal ring road leading to Koh Samui Highway district and Teepras-Pittaya School, Moo 1, Tambon Mae Nam sub-district
Status: There is steady run-off from the surrounding hills. However floodwaters are being drained and the situation is improving. To further speed up the drainage of floodwaters, footpaths impeding the flow of water in the immediate area were demolished and make-shift ditches were dug. Water-pumps have been running round-the-clock. Travel has not been affected. Normal traffic flow.
   
The road in front of Bor Phut Resort and Bor Phut Intersection Moo 1, Tambon Bor Phut sub-district
Status: A 200-metre section of the road remains under 10 centimetres of water. Travel has not been affected, and traffic flow is normal.
   
Soi Soon Ling – Talat Phor Taa Plub Moo 1, Tambon Mae Nam sub-district
Status: The water level is receding but run-off from the hill slopes continues. Areas affected by flooding are being drained. Temporary ditches have been excavated to facilitate drainage.
   

In front of the Big C retail outlet, Moo 1, Tambon Bor Phut sub-district
Status: The water level is receding. The road remains under as much as 20 centimetres of water. However, travel has not been impeded. Normal traffic flow.

   

In front of City Hotel and the Chaweng Post Office, Moo 6, Tambon Bor Phut sub-district
Status: To speed up the drainage of floodwaters, provincial authorities ordered the demolition of a footpath at the foot of the bridge across Klong Chaweng 2 canal that was constructed without proper authorization and which has been impeding the flow of water. Travel has not been affected, and traffic flow is normal.

   
Lamai Beach Intersection, Moo 4, Tambon Maret sub-district
Status: Floodwaters are receding. Although the road remains open to traffic, smaller cars are advised to take the bypass which goes around the residential estate and exit at the road in front of the PTT petrol station. Good traffic flow on this section of the road.
   

SECONDARY ROADS
Residential areas and Communities

The section of the Chaweng beachfront road near the PTT petrol station – Pru Chaweng Intersection – JR Moo 3, Tambon Bor Phut sub-district
Status: The water level on this section of the road varies from 30 centimetres to as much as 1.5 metres deep. The road is currently inaccessible. Traffic is being diverted to Wat Pang Bua Temple and exits via Bon Kai Intersection.

   
Talat Dao – Talat Laem Din
Status: The water level also varies from 30 centimetres to as much as 1.5 metres deep.. Roads rendered impassable and some homes in the area have been inundated.
   
Chaweng Beachfront Road in front of the clock tower
Status: The road is under 20 to 30 centimetres of water. Travel has not been affected.
   
Chaweng Beachfront Road in front of Poppies Hotel
Status: The road is under 20 – 30 cms of water. Travel has not been affected.
To speed up drainage, Koh Samui municipal authorities have installed a water pump.
   
Baan Plai Laem – Choeng Mon, Moo 5, Tambon Bor Phut sub-district in front of Wat Plai Laem Temple
Status: The level of water is down to 10 centimetres and receding, and travel has not been affected.
   
Baan Plai Laem – Choeng Mon, Moo 5, Tambon Bor Phut sub-district in front of the Imperial Boathouse Hotel, Samui
Status: The level of water is 10 cm deep. Travel has not been affected.
   
ASSISTANCE RENDERED BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES
The Koh Samui District Chief Officer instructed village heads and village seniors to recruit reserve volunteers for deployment to areas affected by the floods to provide relief and assistance to flood victims and passers-by.
   
The Koh Samui Highway District Office dispatched traffic police to direct traffic in areas affected by flooding.
   
The Koh Samui Municipality Office dispatched a mobile unit to provide assistance and relief in various affected areas.
   
To speed up the drainage of floodwaters, the Koh Samui Highway District Office demolished footpaths that obstructed the flow of water in the immediate area and organized the excavation of deeper and wider make-shift ditches.
   
The overall situation is steadily improving as a result of efforts to speed up the drainage of floodwaters. In addition, intermittent rainfall on the morning of 9 November has helped ease the situation.
   

FERRY SERVICES CONTINUE UNINTERRUPTED
Given the large size of the ferries, the hourly Don Sak-Koh Samui-Don Sak ferry service operated by Raja Ferry and SeaTran Ferry have not been impacted by weather conditions and continue to operate normally. The crossing takes about 90 minutes.

TRANSFERS AND TRIPS BY BOAT
  • Catamaran trips on the Koh Samui - Koh Pha-Ngan - Koh Tao – Chumphon – Bangkok route with services offered by Lom Phraya Express Boat and SeaTran Discovery are also operating normally with two trips per day at 8.00 am and noon.

  • The daily Surat Thani – Koh Samui – Koh Pha-Ngan – Koh Tao shuttle boat services offered by Songserm Express Boat is operating normally and departs from Surat Thani at 8.00 am daily.
As a result of bad weather, foreign visitors are heading for alternative destinations.

Koh Samui and the Gulf of Thailand are subject to seasonal monsoons at this time of year. This is far from peak season for Samui, with reduced visitor arrivals. Occupancy rates are running at only about a third of capacity.
