Having worked closely with authorities against the illegal wildlife trade at Bangkok’s infamous Chatuchak market (also known as “JJ Market”), WildAid realized the need for extra eyes and ears to detect and report illegal activities.
To satisfy the need, WildAid organized 30 students to become "JJ Spies”.
During a 3 day/2 night training course, students from 6 colleges around Bangkok learned about wildlife trade laws and regulations. The students visited a wildlife sanctuary and received valuable information to help them detect the species most often traded.
On the last day of training, participants surveyed the market itself. Their findings included locations of shops and selling prices of Slow Lorises, imported reptiles, and rare bird species. This information is being complied by WildAid and will be handed over to the authorities. The students agreed to continue to regularly patrol the markets and report their findings.
