In a first for Suvarnabhumi Airport, Thai officials apprehended a 34-year old Japanese man for concealing nine Slow Lorises and one Malayan snail-eating turtle in his luggage.

The suspect confessed to purchasing the slow lorises at Bangkok’s Chatuchak Market for 6,000 THB each. While this is the third time this year Slow Lorises have been confiscated en route from Thailand to Japan, the seizure is a first for the new airport.

Thailand’s CITES officials, Customs officials, and police worked jointly on the seizure, which took place on November 8th. Their collaboration is part of Thailand’s commitment to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN). ASEAN-WEN is a 10-country multi-agency initiative to combat the illegal trade of wildlife.
