THAI POLICE ARREST ON-LINE WILDLIFE TRAFFICKER

Crime Suppression Police inspecting illegal wildlife items

Thai Police raided a downtown Bangkok residence, home to a suspected internet-based trafficker in illegal wildlife parts on May 3. Police detained a 25-year-old Thai man who allegedly tried to sell an orangutan skull to undercover police for the price of 30,000 THB.

Over 50 items of wildlife parts were confiscated; some of the items were identified as hornbill casks, serow horns, gaur horns, a baby elephant skull and several purported orangutan skulls. Police also seized 8 protected arowana fish found during the raid.

The search was conducted by the Crime Suppression Division, Royal Thai Police. The unit usually deals with crimes related to drugs and violence, but the officers said their increased awareness in wildlife crime had motivated them to conduct the investigation leading to this arrest.

Help stop the illegal wildlife trade.
