FISH FARM PROJECTS BRING SUSTAINABLE INCOME TO EX-POACHERS

Fish pond at PeunPa’s Khao Yai Community Outreach village

PeunPa’s community outreach programme is expanding to help more villagers find sustainable means of income and turn away from poaching. Using funds raised by the International School of Bangkok and other supporters, three villages have constructed half-a-dozen fish ponds to raise catfish. The catfish can be sold at nearby markets. Part of the profits go directly to the villagers working on the project, the rest is invested back into a community fund which will support further sustainable development projects.

Bio-gas units are also being installed in the villages, thanks to support of The Blue Moon Fund. The gas produced by these units will help villagers reduce their reliance on firewood cut from the forest. Next month villagers will tell us how bio-gas units help improve the environment.
