Be wary of any encounter with strangers who pose as students, tour leaders etc. that ends up requiring your presence in an acquainted gems/jewellery shop. An encounter of this nature could possibly lead to a gem scam.
Buying gems or jewellery to resell at double or triple the purchase price is an impossible proposition under any circumstances and should not be attempted.
If you are unsure about the reputation of a particular establishment, check back with the Jewel Fest Club or the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association.

The Jewel Fest Club (JFC) founded by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in 1995 represents a joint effort by the Royal Government of Thailand and the private sector to establish quality standards and promote ethical operations in the gems and jewellery trade in Thailand.
When a jeweller becomes a JFC member, the establishment is presented with an Official Club Plaque, the official insignia of genuine, high-quality and value-for-money products. |

The
JFC logo features an icon of a ruby ring with
the names 'TGJTA' and 'Jewel Fest Club', is affixed
in front of all JFC member outlets. This logo
is registered with the Department of Intellectual
Property and its use is reserved exclusively for
JFC members.
The
JFC is a non-profit organization, established
under the cooperation and supervision of the Thai
Gems and Traders Association, the Tourism Authority
of Thailand, the Tourist Police, the Department
of Export Promotion and others. It is dedicated
to monitoring product quality control among Club
Members to create utmost confidence in the authenticity
and value of customer purchase(s) thereby enhancing
the good image of the Thai industry, particularly
the retail sector, as well as trade promotion.

the JFC consists of more than
50 respectable gems and jewellery

Thai Gems and Jewellery Traders
Association (TGJTA) to ensure

that the goods they bought from
a JFC member are not of the
standards claimed, goods can
be returned for a refund.

When you buy a piece of jewellery from an establishment
which is clearly identified as a member of the
Jewel Fest Club, your purchase will be duly recorded,
and a certificate with details of the purchase
will be issued.
The
certificate will clearly state the nature and
price of the purchase. It will also guarantee
a refund. 90% on condition that you return the
merchandise in good condition to the point of
sale within 30 days.

A refund of 80% is guaranteed if the items are returned in the original condition after 30 days but within 45 days of purchase.
If purchases are made by credit card, an applicable bank charge may be deducted by the seller, but refunds must be paid within 30 days of the item(s) being returned to the point of sale, and in the currency in which the purchase has been made by the client. Such refunds may take the form of either cash or bank draft.
The Club is supervised by the TGJTA with committee members from related public and private organisations including the Office of the Consumer Protection Board, Department of Export Promotion and the Tourist Police and Tourist Assistance Centre. |

Thailand

gems and jewellery. As a multi-million baht source
of jobs, foreign exchange and domestic income, the
gems and jewellery industry is of great importance
to the country. If therefore, there are unethical
operators who tarnish the reputation of Thailand
and its gems and jewellery industry, measure have
been undertaken to ensure that unscrupulous operators
are being isolated and deprived of business. TAT
has therefore renewed its call for Thailand's jewellery
shops to maintain the highest standards of professionalism
and products in dealing with customers, and has

do so by raising the visibility of the Jewel Fest
