TAT launches ‘People’s Choice Awards Thailand Voted by Chinese Tourists’

Bangkok, 6 June, 2016 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) today launched special awards for popular tourist attractions and activities in Thailand among Chinese tourists; namely, the “2016 People’s Choice Awards Thailand Voted by Chinese Tourists” and will encourage visitors from China to rate their favourite tourist attractions and activities in Thailand, and get the chance to win trips to the kingdom.

The “2016 People’s Choice Awards Thailand Voted by Chinese Tourists” is aimed at getting vital feedback from Chinese visitors about the things they like most when visiting Thailand. Tourists can vote on Thai attractions in 17 categories including: destinations, tourist attractions, hotels (luxury, boutique, city and beach), airlines, restaurants, spas, medical, shopping areas, shopping malls, shows, festivals, food, fruit and golf. Votes can be cast on the website www.peopleschoiceawardsthailand.com, which will be activated when the voting is open from 7 June, 2016. The voting will be available through to 19 June, 2016.

We want to tailor our services and attractions to meet their needs and expectations. The “2016 People’s Choice Awards Thailand Voted by Chinese Tourists” will give the tourism industry valuable feedback and allow our Chinese guests to win the chance to come back to Thailand. This special awards project follows the success of The Best of Thailand Awards Voted by Chinese Tourists initiative held last year and was well received by Chinese tourists”.

Chinese tourists voting in the People’s Choice Awards have to register their details to get the chance to win a luxury trip to Thailand. The winners will be selected at random from the list of voters and will be announced on 27 June, 2016.

The first prize is a 5-day/4-night trip for 2 to Bangkok and nearby destinations, including air tickets and accommodation. Other top prizes are a one return air-ticket for 2 on each of the following routes: China-Samui; China-Krabi; China-Sukhothai, and China-Chiang Rai. There are also 100 other prizes.

The “2016 People’s Choice Awards Thailand Voted by Chinese Tourists” project is organised under a cooperation between TAT and Tencent Holding Limited, which owns and operates many popular online media in China, including WeChat with 570 million users daily, QZone with 330 users daily, QQmessenger with 27 million users daily, and Tencent news with 27 million users daily.

TAT and Tencent first jointly held a press conference announcing the “2016 People’s Choice Awards Thailand Voted by Chinese Tourists” project in Guangzhou, China on 2 June, 2016. It is expected that the project would strengthen the awareness on Thailand’s tourism among Chinese tourists, achieving at least 12 million impressions, and would attract at least 1.5 million voters.

In 2015, Thailand attracted a total of 7.9 million Chinese tourists and generated 376 million Baht in revenue for the Thai economy, representing an increase of 71.14 per cent and 87 per cent on 2014, respectively. Based on a survey conducted between January and June, 2015, about 55.73 per cent of Chinese visitors to Thailand are free-independent travellers (up 81.20 per cent year-on-year) and the remaining 44.27 per cent are group tourists. The Chinese tourists spent on average 46,363 Baht per person per trip. Their popular destinations in Thailand are Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Krabi.

For 2016, TAT expects that Chinese tourists to Thailand will help contribute no less than 509 billion Baht to the Thai economy.
