2007 NORWEGIAN ‘GRAND TRAVEL AWARD’ FOR 'WORLD'S BEST TOURIST COUNTRY'

Thailand was awarded Norway’s Grand Travel Award ‘World’s Best Tourist Country’ and Thai Airways International (THAI), the national carrier, was voted ‘World’s Best Airlines’, by the Norwegian travel trade for the fourth consecutive year in 2007.

The annual travel award presentation ceremony is organised by Flagbadet Travel News — an independent Norwegian travel trade magazine. Winners in each of the travel-related categories are selected by a travel trade jury comprising 300 members of the Norwegian travel industry. The awards are presented in a total of 17 categories with scores allocated according to a scale of 1-6, with 1 being the lowest score and 6 is the highest.

H.E. Ambassador of Thailand to Norway, Ms. Jittriya Pintong, Mr Manit Boonchim, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand office in Stockholm and Mrs Hilde Hirai, Manager of the THAI office in Oslo represented Thailand at the the annual award presentation ceremony organised by Travel News at the Scandic Edderkoppen Hotel in Oslo, Norway, on January 8, 2007.

Thailand and THAI have both consistently won the Norwegian Grand Travel Awards for the fourth year running.

The Norwegian travel trade ranked the following countries their next top-eight favourites in the ‘World’s Best Tourist Country’ category – Holland, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Brazil, the United States and France. British Airways, Lufthansa, Finair, SAS and KLM were ranked among the top-five in the ‘World’s Best Airlines’ category.

In 2006, 74,196 Norwegians travelled to Thailand, representing an increase of 16.60 per cent over the January to December 2005 total.
