MINISTRIES LINK UP TO PROMOTE WATERBORNE TOURISM ACTIVITIES

Thailand’s new Minister of Tourism and Sports, Weerasak Kowsurat, met with Deputy Transport Minister, Anurak Jureemart, on 18 April 2008, to jointly explore the possibilities for promoting waterborne tourism. Projects planned include pleasure cruises, day-trips, excursions and tours along the kingdom’s rivers, canals and waterways, marine tourism and water sports.

The following projects and initiatives were discussed during the consultative meeting:

  • Concessions for Marine Transportation
Both ministries are keen to promote concessions for marine transportation that will operate between towns on the eastern and western coast of the Gulf of Thailand. This will help reduce the number of container trucks and other heavy vehicles that currently ply the southbound highway between the provinces of Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan, and contribute to heavy traffic and bottlenecks.

Lighter traffic on main highways will facilitate faster and more convenient travel to popular coastal resorts dotted along the upper Gulf of Thailand, especially for tour coaches and passenger cars.

  • High Speed Craft
In conjunction with the above project, the ministries also plan to promote concessions for the operation of high speed craft, such as hydrofoils, for trips and transfers between tourist destinations on the eastern and western coast of the Gulf of Thailand. For example, linking the islands of Koh Chang and Koh Samui, or places like Puek Tien and Laem Chabang, Hua Hin and Pattaya, and Chaam and Chanthaburi.

  • The promotion of pleasure cruises, day-trips, excursions and especially sunrise and sunset tours along the kingdom’s rivers, canals and waterways in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Ayutthaya. Efforts to promote tourism along the canals around the historic Rattanakosin Island, including the section of the Phadung Krung Kasem canal from the UN/ESCAP building to Mahanak, have also been included in the plans.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has proposed that bridges spanning the rivers and waterways and a total of 28 other key landmarks, including historic buildings, along Ratchadamnoen Avenue and Rattanakosin Island, will be illuminated to promote tours by night.

  • Zoning of Beach Destinations
To ensure peace and tranquillity in areas reserved for natural retreats, specific zones will be designated. Specific zones will be allocated for water-sports and other beach activities.

  • Promoting further development of marinas and floating markets

  • Fostering increased safety and security cooperation by implementing preventative measures at river trip destinations and for marine tourism in general.
