Although the traditional “miang kham”, a popular traditional Thai appetizer and light snack, is one of the dishes that best epitomize the simple brilliance of Thai cuisine, surprisingly few foreigners have heard of this savoury appetizer and surprisingly few Thais enjoy it on a regular basis.

The traditional miang kham is a tasty 'do-it-yourself' dish with different tastes and textures coming together in one bite-sized package. “Miang” means “many” and “kham” means “one bite”.

It starts with various condiments — ginger, peanuts, cubes of fresh lime, dried shrimp, coconut flakes, and chili peppers. These are placed together on a dark green wild tea leaf called bai cha pluu. A special sweet and tangy sauce is spooned over the ingredients, rolled up and popped in the mouth.

At Thara Thong, the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers’ elegant Thai restaurant, Chef Songvut Thonoi has taken “miang” to the next level with a special menu of his original creations.

Miang guay teow features a succulent combination of pork and prawn wrapped in rice paper with peanuts and chili.

Other must-try items are miang kana pla tuna: fresh kale leaves filled with tuna, ginger, shallot, chili and lemon and miang kai (with chicken).

For vegetarians there is miang jae, which is made up of cubed tofu, cashew nuts, diced ginger, shallots and chilies and wrapped in fresh cha pluu (wild tea) leaves.

Finally, for a unique “sweet and sour” taste, miang ngoh are fresh rambutans filled with ground pork and herbs.

Experience these, as well as other, culinary delights at the Thara Thong Royal Thai Cuisine restaurant. The venue offers comfortable floor-seating, either at low tables in an air-conditioned teak pavillion or patio dining outside, both with mesmerizing views of the Chao Phraya River. In the evening, a professional musician performs classical Thai music.

Thara Thong Royal Thai Cuisine is open daily for lunch from 12.00 noon to 14.30 hours and for dinner from 18.30 to 22:30 hours.
