Klong Ta Daan, a royally-initiated project in Nakhon Nayok province, is one of Thailand’s new ecotourism and adventure travel destinations.

The Nakhon Nayok River flows through wild country, rich in flora and fauna. A trip on the river is an ideal way to experience nature.

Prior to the construction of the dam, rafting or kayaking on the Nakhon Nayok River was limited to the rainy season during July to October each year. Construction was completed in 2005 and Klong Ta Daan dam is now in full operation.

Water released from the dam for irrigation maintains the flow of the Nakhon Nayok River throughout the year, making it possible for rafting and kayaking activities to continue all year round.

For those in search of wild waters, the ‘Green Season’, which extends from July to October, is the best time of the year for a white-water experience. Challenges in navigating the river vary depending on the characteristics of each section of the river and also during various times of the year.

Whitewater classification for the river ranges from Class 1 to 3. In some parts, its winding course calls for considerable skill in steering around sharp bends or in negotiating cataracts. At Kaeng Sam Chan, Kaeng Khod Koong and the islets of Koh Kaeng, the river cascades over tiers of rock, offering a thrilling ride.

International Grading System Whitewater Classification

• Class 1 – Easy
  The easiest and safest level with fast moving water, ripples and small waves with few obstructions, all obvious. Easily rescued
  
  
• Class 2 – Novice
  Straightforward rapids with wide clear channels evident without scouting. Rocks and medium-sized waves easily missed by trained paddlers. Easily rescued.
  
  
• Class 3 – Intermediate
  Rapids with moderate and irregular waves. Strong eddies and powerful currents, particularly on large volume rivers. Good boat control is required in tight passages and around ledges. Scouting is advisable. Rescue is possible.

Rubber rafts and kayaks for rent are available from trip operators situated on site.
Rental fees are 1,500 – 2,000 baht per rubber raft and 350-450 baht per person for kayaks. Operators also provide essential safety gear such as life jackets, safety helmets, ropes and items needed for rescue efforts. Set off from Klong Ta Daan pier just behind the dam. Trips range from 30 – 90 minutes.
