Bangkok, January 6, 2009 – Thailand has once again been voted the ‘Best Tourist Country In The World’ in the 2009 Norwegian Grand Travel Award.
His Excellency Ambassador of Thailand to Norway, Mr Jullapong Nonsrichai, together with Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand in Scandinavia, Mr. Manit Boonchim, jointly accepted the prestigious travel trade award on behalf of the Kingdom of Thailand.
In his speech during the award ceremony, the Thai ambassador indicated that with tourism in Thailand having been badly affected in 2008, “to receive this award, knowing we still have the confidence of the Norwegians, is a great encouragement for our future efforts. Despite the recent, internal challenges of our country, we will continue to further develop Thailand as a great tourist destination, and we invite all Norwegians to visit Thailand.”
The annual Grand Travel Award, organized by Fagbladet Travel News – an independent Norwegian travel trade magazine, was being held for the fourteenth time in 2009. Winners in each of the travel-related categories are selected by a travel trade jury comprising 400 members of the Norwegian travel industry. Thailand has won the award more than ten times.
Thai Airways International in Norway also won the 2009 Norwegian Grand Travel Award for the best intercontinental airline. 2009 is the fifth consecutive year that Thai Airways in Norway has won the award, competing with Lufthansa, British Airways and SAS for the top place.
