Thailand Wins Go Asia Award 2009 for ‘Most Favoured Asian Destination’

2009-GoAsia-250x150Bangkok, March 11, 2009 – Go Asia is a marketing network which specializes in marketing “Destination Asia.” The target is to increase tourist traffic to Asia and to promote awareness of its individual members.

The results of the sixth annual Go Asia Awards were announced at the gala award ceremony hosted on 11 March 2009 at Viethaus Berlin — the Vietnamese Center for Trade, Investment, Culture and Tourism in Berlin. The best service providers for travel to Asia were honoured.

Thailand received the 2009 Go Asia Award in the Most Favoured Asian Destination category, while the Tourism Authority of Thailand was voted the Best Asian Tourist Board in Germany category.

Prior to this, the Kingdom of Thailand has received the Go Asia Award for Best Destination in Asia for four consecutive years from 2005.

The ‘Go Asia’ award includes participation by Go Asia members, consisting primarily of tour operators who offer outstanding Asia programmes, airlines, and tourism boards. The award programme is organized in cooperation with media partners — Travel Talk magazine (B2B, Niedecken Verlag) and Reise und Preise Magazine (B2B, Reise & Preise Verlags GmbH).

In addition to honouring truly committed corporations and businesses, the Go Asia survey is also meant to provide an overview of the perception of the German market of Asia as a travel destination. Travel agents as well as individual consumers from all over Germany were invited to participate in the voting process.

Since 2005, the Go Asia Awards have been presented in five award categories. These are Most Favoured Asian Destination, Best Asian Tourist Board in Germany, Best Asian Airlines, and Best German Tour Operator for Asian Destination.

This year, two new award categories have been added. These are:

• The Best Asian Hotel/Hotel Chain category, a special media award, being presented by Travel Talk magazine, and

• Most Innovative Packaged Tour
This is a special award, the winner of which was determined by a jury consisting of the Go Asia media partners — Reise und Preise and the trade magazine Travel Talk, the Go Asia Board and professors representing the bbw Hochschule university’s faculty of tourism.

Judges also voted for the most admired destination in Asia.

The Voting Process
Voting, which was conducted online at www.goasia.de, was open to all. Members and non-members of Go Asia were asked to invite their clients to take part. In addition to the open B2C voting, there was also separate B2B voting.

This year, a total of 3,685 participants participated in the voting process which closed on 15 February 2009. Out of this, 2,228 are individual consumers and 1,457 are travel agents, tour operators and others from the travel industry.

The respective three winners in each category were announced at the 11 March gala award ceremony. Each was presented with a certificate and a crystal award.

The results of the 2009 Go Asia Awards were announced by press release and are also being published in the new Go Asia’s business-to-business (B2B) and businesss-to-consumer (B2C) magazines as well as in publications by Go Asia media partners — Travel Talk magazine and Reise und Preise magazine.

The 2009 award ceremony was the first time that the Go Asia Award was held as a public function. In addition to officials representing the international tourism industry, distinguished guests included VIPs from both the political and economic sectors. A cultural show and a casual get-together followed the formal award ceremony.

In addition to the Hainan Tourism Board, the main sponsor of the event, the event organizers also received friendly support from the Tourism Authority of Thailand, bbw Akademie, bbw Hochschule, Sanya Tourism, Reise & Preise, Travel Talk and Viethaus Berlin.

The go Asia initiative was founded in 2003 in order to enhance marketing in German-speaking regions. The goal is achieved by joint marketing activities, such as the Go Asia website, participation in exhibitions and trade fairs, media relations and training initiatives.
