Spark your delicious creativity at Chang Chui Market

Bangkok is a city known for its mixture of historical attractions and ultra-modern shopping malls that bring in tourists and shoppers from all over the world. But now, a new consumer trend is playing its part in Thailand’s cultural and shopping scene. There’s been sharp rise in the number of Bangkok Night Markets offering artistic creativity and authentic original shops.

Thonburi’s Chang Chui is one of the latest of these and is well worth exploring, whether you’re a hipster or an art lover or simply feel like a fun night out with food and friends.  So follow us to spark your delicious creativity at Chang Chui Market

Chang Chui is a “creative space” that spans 11 rai (17,600 square metres) and packs in a variety of unique stores, restaurants and attractions. Though its official English name is “Thailand Tomorrow,” Chang Chui market is a retro paradise which looks back to yesterday with traditional Chinese home-style shops and vintage décor. But there’s also innovative modern art on display. Thai visitors may feel nostalgic when exploring some of the stalls, which have adverts and products from their childhood on display.

The most talked-about aspect of Chang Chui must be the full-size Lockheed L-1011 TriStar airplane model that sits right in middle of the market. The plane is currently being converted into a luxury Thai restaurant called “Na-Oh” (a play on Noah’s Ark).  Thailand’s very own Michelin-starred chef Andy Yang will leave his New York restaurant to oversee the culinary creations in the kitchen. Na-Oh is expected to be opened in early September 2017.

This vintage-hipster walking market is great for everyone who enjoys taking pictures as it displays all kinds of distinctive avant-garde artworks and outlandish sculptures that are worthy of taking up space on your memory card. You can see artistic depictions of everything from the mythical figures of Thai literature to detailed pieces of sculpture.

Vintage toys and items are available throughout Chang Chui

In the Anekpahsong Hall there are displays of vintage items; such as, old cars, decorative animal sculptures, vintage gardening items and everything in between. On some evenings, live violin music adds to the relaxing ambience inside the mega hall.

Music lovers at Chang Chui should visit the Chang Cheum hall where there is everything a music-head could want, including vintage vinyl. The walls are decorated with photos of celebrities in funny poses and these are up for auction. Within Chang Cheum, there is also a music stage where local bands and some big names put on shows for the adoring crowds. Keep up with who’s playing by checking the schedules of performances and activities on the official Chang Chui website.

Once you have soaked in the modern artistic vibes, it’s time to dive into the exceptional food offerings.  Chang Chui, like many other creative Thai walking markets, boasts its own food stalls and food trucks with a variety of local and international cuisine. You can fill your stomach with hot and spicy ribs then go on to enjoy cheesy fried chickens while leaving space for more traditional Thai dishes. Drinks and desserts are also on sale, so you can indulge a sweet tooth and cool off on a hot evening. Air-conditioned eateries and more formal restaurants can be found too, if you’re seeking to impress a guest, partner or parents.
