Bangkok, 8 July, 2016 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Miss Universe China Organisation have entered into an agreement to bring 16 finalists in the Miss Universe China 2016 pageant to Thailand where they will be filmed for a week in October as they undergo various meaningful and joyful activities in the Kingdom.
The high-profile agreement signing ceremony took place on 29 June, 2016, in Shanghai, the People’s Republic of China and was presided over by Dr. Somkid Jatusripitak, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand. The agreement was signed by Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, and Ms. Yue-Sai Kan, the official licensee for the People’s Republic of China of the Miss Universe Organisation.
Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor said, “This agreement forms part of the TAT’s broader initiative to promote Thailand as a women friendly destination. For the Chinese market in particular, the hosting of 16 finalists in the Miss Universe China 2016 will help attract more affluent women travellers from China to Thailand, especially after they see how the contestants have come to enjoy discovering the many amazing experiences in Thailand.”
For a week in October, the 16 finalists in the Miss Universe China 2016 will experience a variety of activities in Bangkok, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai. During the final round (in November, 2016), viewers of the pageant broadcast will have the opportunity to seeing the finalists discover the many amazing stories in Thailand and take part in charitable and social responsible activities. The finalists will also take part in fashion shows and post for a photo-shoot in Thai traditional dress.
During the week in Thailand, the 16 finalists in the Miss Universe China 2016 will be joined by Ms. Yun Fang Xue, who was crowned Miss Universe China 2015, and the Miss Universe China Organisation’s team members, totalling 40 participants. Their activities in Thailand will be shared live through the Miss Universe China Organisation’s website and Weibo and Wechat accounts. In addition, the accompanying press and fan members from China will also be reporting their movements in various other online and offline media outlets across China.
Mr. Yuthasak added, “We also see this partnership with the Miss Universe China Organisation as a great opportunity to enhance the positive image of Thailand as a quality leisure destination among the people of China, which is currently Thailand’s largest tourist market. To this extent, I am very pleased that TAT is getting strong cooperation from the private sector in Thailand. Their enthusiasm in helping to host the 16 finalists in the Miss Universe China 2016 during this coming October will sure help strengthen the popularity of Thailand as a popular destination among travellers from China.”
In 2015, Thailand attracted a total of 7.9 million Chinese tourists and generated 376 million Baht in revenue for the Thai economy, representing an increase of 71.14 per cent and 87 per cent on 2014, respectively. Based on a survey conducted between January and June, 2015, about 55.73 per cent of Chinese visitors to Thailand are free-independent travellers (up 81.20 per cent year-on-year) and the remaining 44.27 per cent are group tourists. The Chinese tourists spent on average 46,363 Baht per person per trip. Their popular destinations in Thailand are Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Krabi.
From January to May, 2016, Thailand welcomed a total of 4,184,071 travellers from China, a 24,02 per cent over the same period in 2015. For the entire year, TAT expects that Chinese tourists to Thailand will help contribute no less than 509 billion Baht to the Thai economy.
