Thailand’s islands once again voted among the world’s best by TripAdvisor travellers

Bangkok,  22 April, 2015 – Five of the many beautiful islands in Thailand have once again been voted by globetrotters among the world’s best in the latest poll for the 2015 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards for Islands.

Ko Tao was named the 5th best island in the world and the Number 1 island gem in Asia. Other pristine island gems in Thailand that have won the hearts of many TripAdvisor travellers are Phuket (No. 3 in Asia), Ko Samui (No. 4 in Asia), Ko Lanta (No. 6 in Asia) and Ko Phangan (No. 7 in Asia). In the 2014 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards for islands, Ko Tao was also voted number 1 best island in Asia and 10th best in the world while other islands were named among Asia’s top 10 islands (See: Thailand’s Island Gems voted among the world’s best by TripAdvisor travellers).

Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, Minister of Tourism and Sports said, “We are thrilled that five of Thailand’s islands have once again been featured within the top 10 islands in Asia for the 2015 Travellers’ Choice awards, as it speaks to the quality of Thai destinations to be recognised by the TripAdvisor global community of travellers. From budget seekers to luxury travellers, visitors will find that there no shortage of possibilities for travellers of every type.”

Of the five islands voted in the 2015 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards for islands, three are located in the Gulf of Thailand. Ko Tao is famous for its powdery, white sandy beaches washed by the waves of crystal-clear sea water, and being Thailand’s most popular scuba diving destination. Ko Phangan boasts pristine beaches and breathtaking scenery while Ko Samui’s lovely beaches offers holiday experiences to meet a range of tastes.

Another two islands – Phuket and Ko Lanta – are located on the western coast of the Thai Peninsular. Phuket or ‘the Pearl of the Andaman’ is one the most popular travel destinations in Thailand. Ko Lanta, on the other hand, offers stunning scenery, pristine beaches and beautiful emerald waters.

Mrs. Juthaporn Rerngronasa, Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) Acting Governor and Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas said, “We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to all TripAdvisor travellers for voting for Thailand’s island gems. These five islands are among many more pristine islands where travellers can seek relaxing beach holiday experiences and, at the same time, Discover Thainess through exploring the island’s natural and cultural treasures as well as the local Thai way of life.”

This is the third year that TripAdvisor has highlighted the world’s top islands based on the millions of reviews and opinions collected in a single year from travellers around the globe.

This year’s awards honour more than 100 islands worldwide including lists for Asia, Africa, Caribbean, Europe, South America, the South Pacific, the U.K., and the U.S. Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions on islands worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period.
