Discover Amazing Stories through Local Experience at FITUR 2017Madrid, 20 January, 2017– The Tourism Authority of Thailand has highlighted the “Discover Amazing Stories through Local Experience” campaign in the largest Spanish travel trade fair, FITUR 2017, between 18 – 22 January, 2017, in Madrid, Spain.

This is the 22nd year of Thailand’s participation in FITUR, the leading travel trade fair for the Spanish-speaking markets, including Spain and Latin America. In 2015, the show was attended by 9,605 exhibiting companies from 164 countries. Also, 124,659 trade participants and 107,213 people from the general public joined.

This year’s Thai contingent includes eight tour operators, five hotels and two airlines exhibiting at the Thai pavilion. Visitors are be able to enjoy a Thai massage demonstration, a demonstration of Abhaibhubejhr herbal products, demonstration of Sukhothai mud dyed cloth, making a “Krathong” and getting a taste of some “Loi Krathong Festival” activities.

TAT representatives have prepared brochures covering major destinations; such as, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Ko Samui, Phuket, Krabi, Pattaya, and Hua Hin. Visitors can also find brochures dedicated to the Unique Thai Local Experience in Sukhothai province.

Spain is an important source of visitor arrivals for Thailand. According to the preliminary figures from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, in 2016 about 156,605 Spanish travellers visited Thailand, up by 11.77 percent over the same period in 2015.

The Spanish market is considered as a quality market. TAT’s analysis indicates that 93 percent of Spanish visitors are F.I.T. travellers. Their favourite destinations are Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Ko Samui, Phuket and Sukhothai. They enjoy Thai food, sea and beach, as well as spa and wellness treatments. Spanish visitors had an average length of stay of 15 days and daily expenditure per person of about 102 Euros (3,972.02 Baht).

Also, Thailand welcomed the delegates of the Confederation Spanish of Travel Agencies (CEAV) who attended a congress and professional trip during 17-20 November, 2016, in Chiang Mai. TAT organised a Fam trip for them to discover in-depth stories of their destinations in Thailand.

This year, TAT will be focussing on promoting “Unique Thai Local Experiences” in line with the strategy to position Thailand as a ‘Preferred Destination’ and raise Thailand’s ranking in the top 7 global destinations in terms of tourism revenue.

Mr. Tanes Petsuwan, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing (Europe, Africa, Middle East, and Americas said, “The ‘Unique Thai Local Experiences’ campaign is designed to deliver an innovative and cultural mix to tourists while inviting them to explore these experiences under the powerful narratives of “Discover Amazing Stories in Amazing Thailand.”

He added, “A Local Experience in Thailand does not only focus on the community-based tourism, but also covers the experiences that travellers learn more about the way of Thai life as well as the unique stories behind it in a specific area, distinctive with its own history, culture, or tradition. Thailand has unmatched strength in hospitality, distinctive Thai way of life, culture, and history, not to mention the diversity of destinations, which results in a variety of amazing experiences in Thailand.

Last year, FITUR was attended by 7,184 journalists from 60 countries, a turnout that demonstrates the importance of FITUR on the international circuit of tourism sector events.
