Bangkok, 6 October 2025 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) proudly announces that Lanta Archipelago National Park in Krabi has been named among the 2025 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories. This achievement is joined by nine other Thai destinations nationwide, underscoring the Kingdom’s growing global reputation as a leader in sustainable tourism.
The results were revealed at the Green Destinations Global Conference 2025, held in Montpellier, France, by the Green Destinations Foundation of the Netherlands.
Lanta Archipelago National Park was recognised for its community-driven marine conservation project under TAT’s Krabi Prototype initiative. The winning story, titled A Hero’s Tale from Lanta Island, showcased the “Return Home to Hermit Crabs” project, which restores marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems by addressing the shortage of seashells, vital as natural homes for hermit crabs. Through donations from tourists and the public, the project has reduced marine waste, enhanced conservation awareness, and fostered long-term community engagement.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said “Thailand’s success in the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories shows that sustainability is no longer an aspiration, but a defining principle of our tourism development. The achievement of Lanta Archipelago National Park under the Krabi Prototype highlights how collaboration with partners, communities, and entrepreneurs can deliver meaningful impact. This milestone affirms Thailand’s leadership in shaping a responsible future for global tourism.”
At the national level, TAT is advancing sustainability initiatives directly aligned with global frameworks, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals. These include the 17 Sustainable Tourism Goals (STGs), the Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating (STGs STAR), Carbon Footprint Hotels (CF-Hotels), and the Thailand Tourism Awards. Together, these programmes encourage tourism businesses to adopt responsible practices that protect the environment, preserve cultural heritage, and strengthen community participation, while positioning Thailand as a model for sustainable tourism worldwide.
Alongside Lanta Archipelago National Park, nine further Thai destinations were recognised in the 2025 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories: Royal Park Rajapruek in Chiang Mai; Kui Buri National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan; Uthai Thani Old Town in Uthai Thani; Mu Ko Chang National Park in Trat; Tha Chai Community, Si Satchanalai in Sukhothai; Chak Ngaew Ancient Chinese Market in Chon Buri; Chiang Khan in Loei; Nan Old Town in Nan; and Na Kluea Old Town in Chon Buri. These destinations will be promoted internationally through the Green Destinations network, thereby strengthening Thailand’s sustainable tourism profile worldwide.
