Chiang Mai Design Week returns on 1-15 December

A week-long celebration of design innovations by established and upcoming designers, artists and entrepreneurs in Chiang Mai

Bangkok, 20 November, 2019 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is inviting local and international tourists and visitors planning a trip to Chiang Mai this December to include a visit to the ‘Chiang Mai Design Week 2019’, which will take place from 1-15 December at the TCDC Chiang Mai, Three Kings Monument and some other areas around Chiang Mai.

Under the theme of ‘Lived Well’, the event will bring together more than 500 designers, creative professionals, and artists from Chiang Mai and elsewhere in Thailand, as well as from 10 other countries.

Taking place from 10.00 – 20.00 Hrs. daily during the seven-day period, the Chiang Mai Design Week 2019 will feature over 200 activities in seven categories.

Exhibits – present the benefits of design on modern living from four groups of creators – entrepreneurs, designers and creative professionals, artists, and public and private organisations.

Seminars – a centre stage for experience sharing by local and international designers and creative professionals.

Workshops – providing shared experience with design works among the younger generation, local communities, tourists, and anyone interested in design and craftsmanship.

Experiential tours – providing an understanding of local culture and wisdom through shared experience with local communities.

Networking opportunities – a conversation space and where people can get together and share design knowledge that celebrates the creative culture and the potential of design.

Events – special activities visitors and anyone interested in design.

Marketplace – a collection of shops and brands from creative businesses, designers, creative professionals, and artists. Products range from furniture, home decorative and lifestyle items, accessories and food.

Organised by the Creative Economy Agency, Chiang Mai Branch, the Chiang Mai Design Week 2019 is the fifth edition of the annual festival that celebrates design innovations or new projects that cater to the needs of modern living. The event is a centre stage for creators from different industries, established and upcoming designers, artists and entrepreneurs to get together and share design knowledge.  

The event also celebrates Chiang Mai being designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as a ‘Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art’ since 2017.

According to UNESCO, the Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organisation demonstrates a strong commitment to strengthen further educational and cultural institutions to protect and promote the city’s crafts heritage. It has also launched an entrepreneurship programme, the ‘One Sub-district, One Product’ initiative, which aims to support locally produced craft products on the global market. A large number of small-scale producers, including from various communities, have already benefitted from this programme through marketing and communication capacity- building workshops.
