TAT jointly holds European Tour golf tournament in Thailand

Bangkok, 13 February, 2015 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is giving its backing to the ‘True Thailand Classic 2015 presented by Black Mountain’ – the much-anticipated European Tour golf tournament, to be held from 12-15 February, 2015, at the Black Mountain Golf Club, Hua Hin.

Thailand Classic_1The PGA European Tour is increasingly holding its professional golf tours in other parts of the world. This year Thailand is to be one of the hosts. The event, featuring some of the biggest names in European golf, has been organised by the European and Asian Tours, and is returning to Thailand after a gap of eight years. The news has already created a huge buzz among the region’s golf fans.

Thailand is one of the 26 countries playing host to the European Tour tournaments, which will see the world’s top golfers battle it out for a US$2 million prize. The exciting series of tournaments will culminate in the crowning of Europe’s number one golfer in Dubai, at the DP World Tour Championship.

Thailand Classic_2Joining the Hua Hin stage of the ‘True Thailand Classic 2015 presented by Black Mountain’ tournament will be a total of 144 golfers, including 62 golfers from the European Tour, 62 from the Asian Tour and 16 top players of the Thailand Professional Golf Association (TPGA). There will also be four VIP guest golfers taking part.

The cream of European golf will be represented by big name players; such as, captain of the EurAsia team, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, from Spain; Thomas Bjørn, the first Dane to qualify for the European Ryder Cup team; British golfer Tommy Fleetwood who earned 19th place in last year’s contest Race to Dubai; Simon Dyson, the champion of European Tour, and Nicholas Colsaerts, the Belgian 2012 Ryder Cup star.

The local golfing talent will be led by Thongchai Jaidee – the tournament ambassador, winner of six European Tour events to date and ranked 39th in the world. Other Thai players include Thaworn Wiratchant, who holds a record 18 Asian Tour titles, Prayad Marksaeng, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Prom Meesawat and Chapchai Nirat.Renowned players from the Asian Tour to be presented at the True Thailand Classic 2015 include Koumei Oda, who represented Japan at the EurAsia Cup; Black Mountain Golf Course, Prachuap Khiri KhanDavid Lipsky of the US, who won the 2014 Omega European Masters and Anirban Lahiri, 2014 Asian Tour Players’ Player of the Year, the rising Indian star who won the 2012 and 2013 SAIL-SBI Open and who is an Asian Tour Order of Merit champion.

Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik, TAT Governor said, “The True Thailand Classic presented by Black Mountain is creating a great deal of excitement among golf lovers all over the region. This internationally-enjoyed event gives us the chance to showcase some of the world-class golf courses that Thailand can boast. The kingdom is home to the most stunning courses in the world and people come from all over to play on them. Also, we now have some of the best players too and it will be a huge treat for locals and visitors alike to see Thailand’s golfers play against the cream of Europe.”

On this occasion, TAT will invite Thomas Bjørn, Thongchai Jaidee along with some other players to have the experience of Muay Thai Chaiya (Traditional Southern Style Thai boxing) with “Khru Praeng”, Thailand’s expert on this type of boxing instruction.

Golf fans can buy tickets through Thai Ticket Major by visiting www.thaiticketmajor.com. The ticket price is 400 Baht per day for the rounds between 12 or 13 February; 800 Baht per day for 14 or 15 February, or 1,200 Baht for a 4-day pass ticket.
