Bukruk II Urban Arts Festival to enhance the image of Bangkok as the city of arts

Bangkok, 23 January, 2016 – Bangkok’s positive image as the city of arts is set to be enhanced with the hosting of the Bukruk II Urban Arts Festival that will bring top performances, paintings and playful expressions by 20 artists from across Asia and Europe to the Thai capital from 23-31 January, 2016.

Dr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said, “The hosting of the Bukruk II Urban Arts Festival that attracts a number of world-renowned arts and performers will certainly seal the Thai capital’s status as the city of arts. Each year, Bangkok and Thailand attract a lot of global artists, performers and celebrities who have come to enjoy the plethora of tourism products and services, as well as to find inspirations for their future masterpieces.”

Held for the second time after its debut edition in 2014, the 10-day event will take place at a riverside community recently established as a “Creative District,” starting with a massive street party and three-stage music festival followed by six exhibitions, 10 giant public wall paintings, a night of animation, a mobile print shop, workshops and artist talks. A mapping projection and outdoor party are scheduled as the event’s grand finale.

Bukruk II Urban Arts Festival: highlights:

  • The Bukruk Music Festival will take place on 23 January, bringing together an eclectic array of musicians and artists hand-picked from across Europe and Asia for the opening party at an authentic and historical naval dry dock, just a short walk from the BTS Saphan Taksin Station;
  • Daily wall paintings at locations in the streets of the surrounding Bang Rak district. Stroll from one wall to another and have the extraordinary chance to watch street art celebrities; such as, Spain’s Aryz and Belgium’s Roa in full action;
  • Exquisite art exhibitions featuring more than 100 original artworks by 12 Bukruk artists at seven gallery partners from 26-30 January;
  • A Mobile Print Shop that will pop up every day in unconventional ways to craft handmade zines from rebel French art group Le Dernier Cri, dainty limited-edition silkscreens from Bukruk artists produced by local print makers of The Archivist, and other Bukruk souvenirs. On 23 and 30 January, the shop – tricked out by a fresh Thai design team 56th Studio – will transform into a full print studio in which The Archivist will introduce silkscreens to visitors who will take home their very own creations;
  • Bukruk and TCDC jointly bring two rock stars of their own practice: Panop Koonwat animator and Le Dernier Cri printmaker for workshops on 29 January. Panop will give an introduction to character building and moving, while Le Dernier Cri will give an introduction to zine making;
  • On 30 January, The Jam Factory’s Talad Knack will be the backdrop for memorable outdoor screenings of European and Asian animation selected by Panam Anim and Florence Lucas of France. Yuree Kensaku and Maythee Nojinda will boost audiences at nightfall with a live performance blending music and animation;
  • For the first time on 31 January, the TCDC’s new building, the Grand Post Office will open its doors to the public to present both national and international artists to speak about their practice. Feel free to ask Martha Cooper, Motomichi Nakamura, Florence Lucas and The Archivist about their practice after their presentation and join the last programme of Bukruk after the talks.
  • The Bukruk II Urban Arts Festival will end in style with an outdoor party at the historic Grand Post Office building, which will be revamped, mutated and remodeled in a giant mapping projection by Japanese multimedia artist Motomichi Nakamura.
