Thailand and Korea draw up deal to jointly promote tourism between the two countries

Bangkok, 28 March, 2016 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding – on Cooperation in the Field of Tourism – with the Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO) and the Korea Association of Travel Agents (KATA), with the objective of paving the way for collaboration between the two countries in several areas of tourism.

The signing ceremony for the MOU was held on 24 March, 2016, in Seoul, South Korea, with Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, representing the team from Thailand.

Mr. Yuthasak said, “This MOU signed with the Korean tourism agencies will serve to enhance tourism links between our two nations. On cooperation with the KTO, there are plans for personnel training, cultural exchanges, and for the future co-hosting of tourism activities together. Meanwhile, closer cooperation with the KATA will help to streamline and enhance the productivity of our tourism marketing and sales promotion as well as help in areas; such as, familiarisation trips for media and travel agents to promote tourism in both countries.”

Under the terms of the MOU, TAT plans to develop an online tourism application that can give vital information to Korean tourists and the business sector. The app will offer general tourist information and news updates with special recommended attractions to see. There will also be more specialised information about topics; such as, locations suitable for shooting Korean films or videos.

This implementation of this app is in line with the TAT’s strategic plan to promote film making in Thailand as well as to market Thailand as a tourist destination for Korean travellers. By promoting Thailand’s many attractions via foreign film and television, people will be inspired to travel to the kingdom to visit locations and places associated with their favourite movies and shows.

To-date, the current most popular destinations for Korean tourists include China, Japan, the US, Hong Kong, and Thailand.

Mr. Yuthasak said, “While the Korean honeymoon market to Thailand has been strong and remains so, there is an increasing trend for longstay tourists and for people coming here to study or for other educational purposes. The medical tourism market is also growing as Koreans recognise Thailand’s excellence for healthcare.”

With the strengthened cooperation with the KTO and KATA that this MOU brings, TAT expects that the number of Korean visitors to Thailand will increase by at least 10 per cent by 2018. That is an increase in numbers from 1.5 million to 1.8 million visitors annually.
