River Kwai Bridge Week 2020 promises to wow visitors to Kanchanaburi

The annual event is set for 27 November-6 December in Thailand’s western-most province.

Bangkok, 16 November, 2020 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to advise that this year’s ‘River Kwai Bridge Week and Kanchanaburi Red Cross Fair’ will take place from 27 November to 6 December 2020 at the famous Bridge on the River Kwai.

The annual event in Thailand’s western-most province of Kanchanaburi is staged to honour the Allied PoWs and Asian labourers forced by the Japanese army to build the infamous Death Railway during World War II.

The highlight is a dazzling light-and-sound show, while there is also other entertainment like cultural and concert performances, exhibitions, food and music and the sale of locally made products. The Red Cross Fair is held in conjunction.

The town of Kanchanaburi where the Bridge on the River Kwai is situated is 135 km west of Bangkok and is easily reached with daily train and bus services, in both cases a trip of around three hours.

The destination offers a number of attractions in addition to the Bridge on the River Kwai, including World War II museums and cemeteries, Mueang Sing Historical Park where there are two 13th and 14th Century Khmer temples and Sai Yok National Park with its mountains, waterfalls and caves.

A couple of hours by road from Kanchanaburi town are Hellfire Pass and Three Pagodas Pass, other sites associated with the Death Railway. At Hellfire Pass is a museum run by the Australian government and which is dedicated to the memory of those who died under the Japanese wartime occupation.
