World record attempt: golf cart drive from Pattaya to Phuket

Bangkok, 16 February, 2015 – While attempting to set a Guinness World Record for driving an electric golf cart from Pattaya to Phuket, a distance of approximately 1,400km, Graham Haslam and Mark Cameron have this week reached a milestone in their efforts to raise money for Phuket charity, Phuket Has Been Good To Us, hitting the 1-million Baht mark.

Dubbed ‘The Longest Drive’ and set to start next month, the intrepid duo have received tremendous support from around the Asia Pacific region helping them to surpass one million Baht in pledged sponsorship and donations. The latest company to help push them over the 1-million Baht mark is co-sponsor of the world record attempt, the Asian Seniors Tour.

Chuan Campbell, organiser of the Asian Seniors Tour said, “I have known and supported Phuket Has Been Good To Us for many years. When I read about this world record attempt by Graham and Mark I had to be part of it. I just wish I was joining them! This is yet another great fund-raising idea that these two have come up with and I am pleased that we at Asian Seniors Tour are able to support them.”

On a recent test drive from Nonthaburi to Lotus Valley golf course in Chachoengsao province, the golf cart’s set of six 8-volt Trojan batteries provided for the World Record attempt delivered an impressive 95 kilometers per day. With the trip covering 1,400km through nine provinces, the daily charge is essential to complete the challenge in approximately 24 days.

Golf cart owner, David Westrick from Golf Cart Thailand, was delighted with how well the cart performed. “We have had that golf cart for almost 18 months and I am very impressed seeing what it was capable of. It was a fantastic journey through a very small portion of Thailand with people encouraging us on the way.  Hopefully the excellent Thai weather will continue for the trip.”

The start date for The Longest Drive has been set for 8 March. The cart will depart from Hard Rock Cafe Pattaya with its final destination being Hard Rock Café Phuket, where a gala event will be held on 8 April to welcome home the adventitious duo and announce the final amount raised for Phuket Has Been Good To Us.

Phuket Has Been Good To Us works to improve the economic opportunities and life chances of young people, by funding and implementing high quality, practical English language education in government schools on Phuket Island.

Phuket Has Been Good To Us creates vocational opportunities by developing English skills both through formal education as well as after school and non-curricula activities. The charity teaches English to over 1,000 children in three Government schools, employing qualified, fluent English-speaking teachers to provide the best possible English language education.
