APEC Tourism 2022 delegates experience ‘Regenerative Tourism’

Held on 15 August, under the theme of ‘Creative Placemaking: Regenerative Approach.

Bangkok, 16 August, 2022 – Delegates attending the 11th APEC Tourism Ministerial Meeting and the 60th APEC Tourism Working Group Meeting in Bangkok from 14-20 August, 2022, had the chance to experience first-hand the event’s ‘Regenerative Tourism’ concept during the workshop on “Creative Placemaking: Regenerative Approach, Better Lives Through Better Places”.

Held on Monday, 15 August, 2022, the workshop took place at “GalileOasis”, a 40-year-old Renaissance building situated in Bangkok’s Banthat Thong area amidst the chaotic urban surroundings. Designed to elevate the well-being of the local people and bring life back to the area, the project includes a gallery, theatre, and café, and serves as an ‘oasis’ that revitalises anyone passing by.

The half-day workshop started with welcoming remarks by the creator of the GalileOasis. This was followed by a conversation with the place maker, Noppamas Pattarakul, on the story and journey of the place making: regenerative approach moderated by Dr. Jutamas Wisansing.

After a walk through the place, the delegates then participated in the reflection and discussion session on key learnings pressing through a canvas, as well as sharing and exhibiting the final thoughts that reflected Regenerative Tourism.

The workshop was organised under the idea that tourism must be an agent of positive change, acting as a sustainable champion, and manifesting its contribution to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
